Cornerstone of Trust - P1


Have you ever tried to make a recipe without one of the ingredients? More than likely the dish will be edible but sometimes when (unbeknownst to us) that missing ingredient is the key component, even a forkful is unpalatable. We know that in the recipe of our lives we need trust, the ingredient that coalesces all the flavors. What we might not know is the trickle down impact caused by lack of trust, which we'll cover over this multiple part series.


If we don't have trust, we won't be vulnerable.


Vulnerability: it's the difference between best friends and acquaintances. Obviously we wouldn't bare our soul to the person we just met, but over the course of interactions, as the bridge of trust is built, we can place more weight on it. As those supports become strengthened we vulnerably share our hurts, habits, and hangups which moves the friend to best friend.


We desire to know others and be known for who we are.


No masks, no facade, just us - warts and all. And while we desire this in our personal lives, it's true for every realm as well, professional life certainly not excluded - almost more so.

We spend way more time with clients and teammates than our kids and partners. It's in the daily grind of work that we often feel satisfied by an achievement or beaten down by stress. Within this realm vulnerability is often overlooked, because it's deemed more fitting to stay within the bounds of our personal lives, but I argue otherwise.


The chief benefit of vulnerability is that it builds others' confidence in you.


To move projects across the goal line, to deepen a client relationship, to further your personal brand - that's what you need: Confidence, and you get that through vulnerability.


Vulnerability at work does look different from our personal lives.


I won't share the personal struggles of addiction with my co-workers or clients (but I will share it on my site so they can read it... lol), but I will share that I struggle with coming up with a concept, or don't understand what they're asking for. Vulnerability at work means:

  • admitting to mistakes
  • sharing weakness and strengths
  • confessing misunderstandings
  • celebrating achievements

Being vulnerable has it's benefits:

  • allows the pairing of other's strengths to your weakness
    • better end results
  • quicker lessons learned
  • pivot direction faster
    • nimbly recovers from wrong direction 

Vulnerability at work, though can seem a weakness, is actually a strength that can propel you further than any facade we'd like to consturct.
